Nose Retainers
A nose retainer is a transparent or neutral toned insertion used to disguise a nose piercing in situations where a nose ring cannot be worn such as school, work, or any occasion where a nose ring may be frowned upon or not allowed. They are designed to maintain a piercing while keeping it virtually invisible.
The most common nose retainers are ¼ inch 18 gauge barbells with a clear disk on one end; however, many gauges and styles are available to fit any piercing. Though some nose retainers come with a clear ball, it is generally best to select a flat disk style to better conceal the piercing. They may only be used for piercings that are completely healed, and a lubricant is recommended to insert the nose retainer smoothly and avoid damage to the delicate tissue. However, nose retainers are hypoallergenic and completely safe for the wearer.
Nose Retainers come in various materials such as Bioplast or acrylic, and are comfortable to wear. Some even have removable heads, so that disks in various colors such as black, brown, clear, and flesh tone may be inserted without removing the post. It may be best to try several before deciding which nose retainer works best for you. Some are designed to look like a freckle or blemish, while others are designed to blend with your skin tone. Depending on the shape of your nose, location of your piercing, and your skin tone, one style may work better for you and your situation than someone else’s. Prices are affordable enough that one can try several styles before wearing the nose retainer for an occasion where body jewelry is not allowed.
Many online body jewelry retailers carry a variety of nose retainers at prices ranging from about $4.00 U.S. to $20.00 U.S. They may also be found at body piercing studios or shops carrying a wide variety of body jewelry in your area.
